We wanted to share a few words about our very good friend and fellow cyclist, Bill Barrie, who after a long-fought battle with cancer, died at home on Sunday 22nd October, aged 78.
Bill’s long and illustrious career in medicine in both Glasgow and Buffalo State New York led him to the role of Clinical Director of Surgery at Leicester General Hospital; career highlights include being a pioneer of minimal invasive surgical techniques and introducing Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy to Leicester in 1991.
Cycling was in Bill’s DNA. Growing up in Muirhead near Glasgow and from relatively humble beginnings, very early on he was recognised and encouraged by his local club as a young talented rider and became a Scottish hill climbing champion. He joined the Welland Valley Cycling Club more than 20 years ago and was a very active member of the club, serving for years on the committee and he was always available for marshalling duty. Bill was an excellent time trialist, winning the Veterans’ Championship many times over.
In retirement Bill was a major contributor to our group: he was very kind and generous with his time, being particularly supportive to young riders and novice time trialists. His appreciation of the help and support was shown in his formative cycling career was reflected in his support of youth cycling, where he generously donated to the Welland Valley youth development initiatives. Bill was always the ‘go to’ person for advice and opinions on all aspects of cycling.
Bill was a stickler for cycling etiquette; leading from the front woe betide anyone who half wheeled him! In Bill’s world there were no hills, only ‘slopes’ and he always encouraged riders to be the best they could be. Bill has kind and generous with his time, support and advice and his presence will be missed by everyone. Our condolences go to his wife Sheelagh and to all his family.
